Tommy's Clubhouse - Book #1 Fig Street Kids Series

Our youngest son is the same age as Tommy and his friends in the book Tommy’s Clubhouse by Sharon Hambrick, so I thought this would be a good book to read. We are very picky about the books that we give to our children to read, so I was concerned when I saw the cover of the book. On the front of ‘the clubhouse’ are the words “Boys are great, and girls are not” – in our house, words like that are not allowed.

Cautiously, I began to read. Tommy talks and behaves like a typical seven year old boy that is in the second grade. He lives with his sister, Penny; and of course, their dad and mom. His best friends are Howie and Zack. Everyday the “Boys Are Great Club” meets in Tommy’s backyard clubhouse.

I am not going to tell you what happens in the book. I will tell you that I read the complete book in about an hour. The more that I read, the more I was impressed by how Sharon Hambrick so clearly understands little boys and their thoughts and actions. Tommy is an obedient boy, that has been guided by parents that love him and have trained him well.

Farmer Dillo Paints His Barn Book only

I recently purchased the book Farmer Dillo Paints His Barn written by Jesse Adams and illustrated by Julie Speer and Christopher Owen Davis. This is the first of three books to help preschool children learn basic skills in a colorful, fun way. It is a wonderful little book that shows how Farmer Dillo finds the perfect color to paint his new barn. He begins with the color blue, but soon discovers that he can not see his barn because it blends in with the blue sky. “So Farmer Dillo says, ‘Hmm. My barn cannot be blue. I will paint my barn…GREEN!’ So, he does.”

The book is available by itself or with a DVD in the back. On the DVD the book is read clearly by a young girl. The opening menu allows the DVD to be played with words on screen or without words on the screen.  I found both ways to be easy to follow along in the book word for word. I found a small movie clip of the DVD that you can view if you have Quicktime on your computer.
